The Misanthropist is a hip hop producer from Stockholm, Sweden. Stocklyn Retrospective is his debut album featuring artists such as Royce da 5'9, Masta Ace, Termanology, Trife da God, Tame One, Pumpkinhead, Mr Metaphor and many more.

The Misanthropist's sound is rough and features a lot of chopped up samples and straight drums, very much inspired by how hip hop was made in New York in the mid 90's. Big influences are DJ Premier, RZA, J-Zone, 9th Wonder, Pete Rock and Madlib to name a few.

After feeling a little let down with the Brooklyn Academy album this is a much better offering. This is sort of a follow up to the classic 2005 release "Orange Moon Over Brooklyn" even thought it's not officially classed as an album. either way, this is a must have. This surprised me very much. I've always liked Pumpkinhead but you just never really heard too much of him. give this a listen and you'll see that this dude is a straight up underground legend... BK stand up!!!

In spite of the fact that it was released independent of major studio support, revolutionary Vol. 2 made record sales, fueling its revolutionary concept. All of the CDs displayed Immortal Technique's phone number. It was endorsed by Mumia Abu-Jamal, who introduces the album and also provides a speech about hip hop's relationship to Homeland security.

In 2001, Immortal Technique released his first album Revolutionary Vol. 1 without the help of a record label or distribution, instead using money he had made from winning various rap battles. In November 2002, he was listed by The Source as the month's featured "Unsigned Hype", which highlights artists that are not signed to a record label. The following year, in September 2003, he received the coveted "Hip Hop Quotable" in The Source for a song entitled "Industrial Revolution" from his second album. Consequently, since he did not have a record deal or distribution at the time, Immortal Technique is the only rapper in history to have a "Hip Hop Quotable" while being unsigned. He finally released his second album Revolutionary Vol. 2 in 2003 under Viper Records/Nature Sounds distribution on CD and double LP. In 2004, Viper Records and, in 2005, Babygrande Records have re-released Immortal Technique's debut, Revolutionary Vol. 1, to make it available to a wider audience.

Hailing from Brooklyn, DJ and producer extraordinaire Black Panther's debut album is so-called because all the featured MCs rhyme about the events of one night - events so dark that it becomes The Darkest Night Ever. As a member of NYC’s Ancients, and after releasing a quality line of mix CDs and 12”s, he follows in the footsteps of Mr. Lif and Prince Paul with a hip-hop concept album that demonstrates his recent prolific production work with a hefty 17 tracks.

The album features some of the hottest underground MCs around at the moment and brings many of them together on the posse cut Home Security, which features Loer Velocity, Mazzi, Oktober, Sub Conscious, Pumpkinhead and Stic Man of Dead Prez. Other stand out tracks include Jean Grae’s spooky The Darkest Night Ever!!!, where she contemplates - over interesting beats - being stuck in a world by herself, whilst Murs (who has had a great year on Def Jux) spits flames on Where’s the Beef?.

This is an interesting work, and it's great in some places, but then that might just be due to the large variety and quality of featured MCs. The beats are consistent, but are consistently dark, in line with the whole concept and feel of the album. Even the cover artwork reminded me of that of a horror-core metal band. So if you’re looking for a bit of light relief, don’t go for The Darkest Night Ever, but if you’re having a bit of a black, bleak day it just might suit your mood!

Mr. Met, a native New York City born musician raised in Park Slope Brooklyn, was introduced to the culture of hip hop in the mid 80’s. Being half French and half Jewish Met came up battling on street corner ciphers and local Mc competitions with a mission to prove himself as an mc.

After internal conflict with his first group “SUB 4”, met decided to accept the invite from the other local Park Slope group making noise “Zooty Zoo”, and joined forces with Building Block (Block McCloud) and Will Tell. The 3 artists formed the group Word A Mouth and went on to be featured on the Lyricist Lounge Volume 1 album hosted by De La Soul. This Album was released in the golden era of hip hop and opened up an audience to Mr. Met so detrimental to his success today. Soon the legendary Pumpkinhead, another Park Slope native MC came into the picture and the chemistry between the artists was like none other. They formed the Brooklyn Academy and went on to release a number of independently released records that topped college radio, billboard and dance charts.

Mr Met released his first and only independently produced album “Metropolis” in 2005.

When it comes to top drawer lyricism and neck snapping beats, the names Pumpkinhead, Mr. Metaphor, and Block McCloud ring out like a shot. From their head turning appearances at Lyricist Lounge to their performances on the international circuit to their much loved singles and mixtapes, the three emcees have built an army of fans hungry for authentic rap music. Together as Brooklyn Academy, the trio represent a return to the original aesthetics of hard core hip-hop. Bored of Education, the group's full length debut, is the culmination of a career at the forefront of the lyric driven hip-hop movement. A collective of emcees who have been holding down the microphone for over a decade each, Brooklyn Ac approach their craft with a love of the fundamentals of rap music rarely seen in the age of million dollar ringtones. For the fans who have been following their career from the first drum hit, at long last, the wait is over.

*X-Rae*
Raise Ya hands wasn't a great way to start the album for me. Illmind is a god but if you have ever played 'chopsticks' on the piano.. this beat is like the violin version. A 5min 45sec violin version. By the time I reached the middle of the track, I wanted to cut the strings off that fucking violin!!!

Don't make the mistake of thinking that 'This Is Brooklyn' or 'That's Brooklyn' will be the anthems that their titles would lead you to believe, because they're not. Both are rhymed over down tempo drums and claps (yes, claps.), the latter almost sounding South with the chants. It was also a tad overkill to place these tracks playing immediately one after the other. The following track 'The Growler' injects some much needed energy into the first half of the album. Marco Polo providing a bouncy beat on which the emcees come to life, all of them grabbing a syllable and fucking with it (RA The Rugged Man styleeee) til they've murdered their verse:

Pumpkinhead: "It's Brooklyn Ac; We accurate; We accumulate the accolades to aggregate an accurate accident in the Acura bumpin' Academy; Actually your anatomy gets an axe; I'll send a cannonball through your canopy; Can it be so simple; Crack through your draw brizzle (bridge); Mack with a long pizzle (pistol); Ac is the wrong crizzle (crew); To act like you're gon' pistle - whip; This is a crooked track; Met, Block and PH what you lookin' at?"

After another two so-so tracks ('Hide' & 'Tear It Down'), the trio come with their Killah Priest collab, Splash. As soon as the joint plays, you know it's gonna be a goody and just acts as such a refreshment after the slow and somewhat lifeless beats that precede it. Strings, emotional vocals, guitar riff..Block comes fierce when the drums kick in and the other emcees follow suit, flowing nicely over the beat and doing themselves justice. Priest is completely in his element and this is the type of beat you can imagine him rhyming over. Naturally, he kills it.

Black Out is another strong track on the album, latin sounding horns and piano over energetic drums. You'd expect nothing less from the Snowgoons who also lace the chorus with delicious cuts. All emcees, along with Jean Grae who perhaps steals the show, do their thing. Next comes Suicide, another banga with a catchy ass chorus! I wish there could have been more of these tracks on the album! The Academy keep up the momentum with Close Your Eyes, an AOTP-type, epic of a song carried by sped up vocals on the chorus.

Next comes the minimalist Indian beat on Back In Effect which is just..well, it's a bit rubbish really. Skip! Black Milk makes his appearance on the joint with production on What's The Buzz which again comes across as a hollow track, especially when you have in mind the incredible job he did on Elzhi's The Preface, you can't help feel a little disappointed (and there are more claps to enjoy!). They do go out with a bang on Nothing You Can Do, a big orchestral (yet playful!) beat from Denmark's Sicknature, who has worked with the likes of AOTP, Snowgoons and LCN, so expect production along that vein.

I wouldn't say that Bored of Education is wack because it isn't by any means. All three emcees come lyrically correct - I was feelin' Pumpkinhead throughout, and he was entertaining to me even on those joints where I wasn't liking the production ("We bang on tracks like early 19th century asians", "I might've smoked dust in the past but the fact is I never bit it"). The album is just let down by one too many mediocre beats; out of 17 songs, I would say 6 are dope..the rest are just not that special and a couple are downright horrible. It's a shame because when Block, Met and Pumpkinhead are riding over a sick beat, they truly do shine.. there just wasn't enough of it. Is it worth getting the album? Hmm.. I would say yes. Those 6 tracks really were that dope.

Grown Folks is a hip hop group from Richmond, VA. The group consists of 2 members; producer Dox 1 (Wordsworth “Trust”, Pumpkinhead “2 Rude” and “Payperview”, Boogieman “Big Boogie”, Da Ranjhaz “High Off of Mescaline” and others) and emcee MicSource (most notably “In the Game” featuring Skillz). The chemistry between the 2 is undeniable on their 2005 mixtape “It is What it is.” This was acknowleged in many of the mixtape’s reviews including ones from okayplayer.com and ragomagazine.com (UK).

With the praise from “IIWII”, the group went onto complete their highly anticipated album entitled “Child’s Play.” Complete with guests appearances from Phil Da Agony, Skyzoo, Darien Brockington, K-Hill, Buff 1 (Athletic Mic League) and others, the album proves the need for a group that can deliver heat with substance. Whether approaching topics that the adult listener can actually empathize with (“Family Man”, “Sunday”) or just throwing darts (“No More” featuring Phil Da Agony, “Bang Ish”), Grown Folks assert themselves as a needed commodity in a hip hop world of guns, pimps, hustlers and hoes. There is more to the world than the aforementioned topics, and the group makes this clear.

The future is bright, and the call is yours. Let’s not just talk about what the game needs…let’s make it happen.

This album is a slept on banger! Dox 1's production is drenched in soul with sprinkles of funk for MicSource & Dox himself to lace their grown man lyrics, covering a number of subject matters. All over this album, they promote a positive vibe that you can't help to jam out to. Out of the 17 tracks, there's two that I weren't feelin', "Girl Holla" & "Keep Your Hands High", simply because they don't really fit with the rest of the album, almost bordering on a commercial sound, and I don't do commercial! the rest of the album though is a work of art, Dox 1 really has an ear for beautiful soul samples and dirty drums and bass. MicSource comes correct on nearly every track. Trust me on this one, this album is pure fire, almost a classic in my book. Peep the Micsource MySpace page, they have a new track out called "Back in The Building" off their soon to be released sophomore album, "Grumpy Old Men", don't sleep!!!

Orange Moon Over Brooklyn features guest appearances from Immortal Technique, Jean Grae, D.V. Alias Khrist, Supastition, Wordsworth, and others. The album is entirely produced by Marco Polo and features cuts by turntablist DP One.

Brooklyn’s proudest battle MC delivers his best work yet with this release. Pumpkinhead got his big break by doing a promo for the “Stretch and Bobbito Show” (Stretch Armstrong and Bobbito the Barber). His first 12-inch records in 1998, (”Dynamic” and “Wack MC’s”) had great success on the radio charts. Since then, Pumpkinhead has worked with almost every underground MC in New York, recorded a Seagram’s Gin radio commercial, and toured in Australia, Japan, the Netherlands and Sweden.

Orange Moon Over Brooklyn features the banging tracks “Rock On”, “Trifactor” and “Swordfish”. Without a doubt, Pumpkinhead is back representing BK to the fullest!

Brooklyn's own Black Panther made his mark as a hip hop producer with his 2003 debut release “The Darkest Night Ever” on the label Third Earth. Blessed with lyrics by some of the best underground emcees including Jean Grae, stic man of dead prez, Pumpkinhead and C-rayz Walz this concept album received acclaimed reviews from the hip hop world with allhiphop.com stating, “Soon you'll be hearing his name in a lot of those 'favorite producer' arguments”.

This is some dope ass ish!!! This production duo from Poland are fast becoming sought after producers in the US, much like Snowgoons & Shuko are now, all reppin' Europe of course. The Single/Ep below was their debut last year but I think the new track "Do You"... and the other two songs definitely bump harder and leave you wanting to hear more from these Polski cats. Their in the lab now, working on the collaboration album with the legendary El Da Sensei. Don't sleep!!!

You gotta cop this album, JbL is sick with the beats and when you got people like Canibus, Reef The Lost Cauze & Apathy making contributions on the album then you know it's gonna be dope.
