Okay, so here is the story: for the last 4 months I have been heavy on the grind. Spending most of my time throwing shows, DJing clubs/events, doing interviews, building relationships with artists, setting up tours, shopping beats, etc… Now, while I was busy doing all of that, my production partner, the young and multi-talented Beatnick, was heavy in the lab cooking up some new sounds. I remember there was a little stretch where we hadn’t spoken to each other in a minute, and he almost seemed like a different person. I had a hunch that he had stumbled upon some new musical ideas. Then I recall very clearly walking into his studio one day and being completely blown away when all of the sudden the most vibrant and dynamic sounds that I had ever heard completely took over me. I realized right then and there that his musical capabilities had reached another plateau in that he was creating something that was completely new, and did not sound like anything that had come before it. 99% of artists never reach that point. I’m talking even great artists…

I will say this, I have been around what I consider to be some of the most talented people of our generation: Just Blaze, Pharoahe Monch, Sizzla, Buju Banton, Bobbito Garcia, Suheir Hammad, Mos Def, and others… I can say in all honesty that Beatnick is on the same level as these people. I am aware that this is a bold statement, but I know what I see and even more importantly, -> I know what I hear.

With that said, the sounds that I heard coming out of Beatnick’s studio that day would ultimately be the building blocks to what defines us as a production team; and in my humble opinion, what is going to define the direction of music for years to come. Okay, so maybe my opinion isn’t so “humble,” but at least it’s honest. Either way, this project is what is going to introduce us to the world. And for that, I am proud and excited.

One thing about this Common Remix Project that you cannot say is this: you cannot say that we didn’t create a new sound.

Whose World Is This? is the new album from Iranian born producer K-Salaam alongside young American producer Beatnick. With his new set, K-Salaam 'wanted to create something that would serve as a voice for people who do not have one’.

The result is an 18 tracks set including vocals by well known artists of the hip hop and reggae scenes such as Sizzla, Buju Banton, Luciano, Capleton, Jamelody and Anthony B as well as the rappers, Talib Kweli, Dead Prez, Kardinal Offishal and Outlawz. The title refers to the anger in New York City over the not guilty verdict in the Sean Bell murder trial. The mix-tape was released as advance publicity for the later released K-Salaam & Beatnick album, Whose World Is This?, which came out on July 29th, 2008.

NY Is Burning features original songs and remixes from Mos Def, Collie Buddz, Young Buck, Sizzla, Dead Prez, Damian Marley, the Outlawz and more.

In a time for hip-hop when few dare to be different, K-Salaam has taken matters into his own hands with his album, The World is Ours. Dedicated to oppressed people throughout the world, the album's introductory message urges listeners of all backgrounds to give back to their communities and play their part in combating injustice. This type of mentality came from his background.

Raised by a working class family of Iranian-Americans, who were activists in their community, K-Salaam learned to question the system at an early age. But, it was 9/11 that really changed his world on a personal level and raised the stakes on his sense of social duty.

Leaving his home in Minneapolis to get things popping in New York as a DJ and producer, his love for reggae music eventually led him to Kingston, where he forged relationships with reggae giants such as Capleton, Sizzla, and Anthony B. With no prior connections to speak of, K-Salaam also managed to successfully reach out to rappers in the U.S. like Talib Kweli, Mos Def, Dead Prez, Saigon and Papoose, getting each of them to write original material that fit with the album's socially conscious theme.

Although all of the artists he reached out to were like-minded, they were also all more established than K-Salaam. For a relatively unknown producer who managed to rally some of the best hip-hop and reggae artists in the world on his album, K-Salaam is remarkably humble. As he tells it, real recognize real, and the musicians he reached out to, respected his grind and sense of purpose. Along with his partner Beatnik, K-Salaam seamlessly executed his vision for The World Is Ours across cultural borders and musical genres, with soulful, quality hip-hop beats as the sonic foundation. K-Salaam can now enjoy the response from listeners around the world as his message is spread. But, make no mistake, while this project may be the culmination of years of hard work, K-Salaam is just getting started.

First of two producer/mc collabo albums that feature Canadian beatmaker, Elaquent. This one has mc, Introspect supplying the lyrics. This was actually a series started by Blu a couple of years back. He put out a 5 song release called the C.O.R.E and I thought the concept was brilliant. Sene followed up Blu’s release with his own Mixtape entitled “Elevator Music” under the imprint of the C.O.R.E series. As an artist I wanted to present something that I felt not only showed my strongest points as an artist, but also where I have grown and evolved style wise. Some songs, like “Can’t I” are representations of a younger more energetic me, when I really didn’t have a full grasp of my cadence and my lyricism was slightly more simplistic. Song like “These R the Days” and “One day” almost put me in a nostalgic state when I listen to them, because I wrote those songs at very intense periods of my life. Almost every song of the Tape represents a significant phase or point of growth in my life, not necessarily the content of each song, but the time period in which each song was recorded.

Tomorrow is what I want to give you, the future of hip-hop, and Yesterday is what makes me who I am today. So listen to this with an open mind. I was not going for perfection, I want heads to see where I’ve been content wise, styles I’ve experimented with, and hopefully by the time I release my LP they know and understand who I’am, and what I represent.
