Hailing from Brooklyn, DJ and producer extraordinaire Black Panther's debut album is so-called because all the featured MCs rhyme about the events of one night - events so dark that it becomes The Darkest Night Ever. As a member of NYC’s Ancients, and after releasing a quality line of mix CDs and 12”s, he follows in the footsteps of Mr. Lif and Prince Paul with a hip-hop concept album that demonstrates his recent prolific production work with a hefty 17 tracks.

The album features some of the hottest underground MCs around at the moment and brings many of them together on the posse cut Home Security, which features Loer Velocity, Mazzi, Oktober, Sub Conscious, Pumpkinhead and Stic Man of Dead Prez. Other stand out tracks include Jean Grae’s spooky The Darkest Night Ever!!!, where she contemplates - over interesting beats - being stuck in a world by herself, whilst Murs (who has had a great year on Def Jux) spits flames on Where’s the Beef?.

This is an interesting work, and it's great in some places, but then that might just be due to the large variety and quality of featured MCs. The beats are consistent, but are consistently dark, in line with the whole concept and feel of the album. Even the cover artwork reminded me of that of a horror-core metal band. So if you’re looking for a bit of light relief, don’t go for The Darkest Night Ever, but if you’re having a bit of a black, bleak day it just might suit your mood!
