That Realness Is Now Closed!!!

In 2001, Starr joined the Low Budget Crew, which also included D.C. locals Oddisee, Kev Brown, Critically Acclaimed, and Cy Young[1]. His connection with producer Oddisee landed him a deal with New York-based indie label Halftooth Records, which released his debut single, "If", featuring Talib Kweli and Asheru, in early 2004. "If" and its B-side, "Walk the Walk", were included on the Halftooth Records compilation You Don't Know the Half. The single led to a number of guest appearances including The Foreign Exchange's "The Answer", Wordsworth's "Head High", and Symbolyc One and Illmind's "Guilty Pleasures".

In June 2006, Starr released The Starr Report, a mixtape featuring most of his unreleased guest appearances on albums by the likes of Supastition, Cesar Comanche, The Foreign Exchange, and Kev Brown; followed by the single "Against the Grain". On August 29, Starr's debut album, Starr Status, was released, featuring production from Illmind, Khrysis, Kev Brown, Oddisee, DJ Roddy Rod and M-Phazes. Album guests included Kev Brown, Starr's Isaac Jones partner Sean Born, Supastition, Median, Talib Kweli and Asheru.

Starr Status garnered the rapper attention from magazines including Scratch, The Source, and JIVE, who called Starr "one of the best MCs in the game"

For a decade, Hip Hop artist Eternia has been formidable presence in the Canadian and international urban music industry. This lyrical powerhouse has tightened her skills on street corners, stages, and in studio sessions across Canada, the U.S., and Australia. Meet Canada's answer to: 'Who's Got Next?' Following a slew of successful singles, videos & feature releases including “Work it Out”, “Sorrow Song” (Universal/Maple), “Understand if I” (Battle Axe Records), & “Just the Way it Is” (Urbnet), and the Australian national chart-topper “Movin’” (Warner), Eternia proudly introduces to the world her most personal offering yet, the highly anticipated full-length album, It’s Called Life. "I write life music. Sometimes I'm criticized for being too negative or too dark. I'm inspired by my family and personal relationships, and that stuff isn't always happy at times," she says. "It's amazing when you see your fans in the crowd react to lyrics, like 'That’s exactly how I was feeling!' That's why I make music, I want to affect people."

The New Jersey native known as DJ K.O. (Keenan Ormsby) has teamed up with Shaman Work Recordings to release the best hip-hop compilation to come out in years.

Picture This... matches a seemingly endless roster of hip-hop's hottest MC's with an equally impressive group of producers. The result is a tribute to hip-hop's past, present, and future.

Veterans like Diamond D, OC, Masta Ace, and Edo G bring back the past, while lyricists like Talib Kweli, Elzhi (Slum Village), Phonte (Little Brother) and Royce da 5'9" represent today's hottest performers, and newbies like Skyzoo, Kaze, Supastition, Silent Knight and Tiffany Paige set the bar for what's to come. Featuring tracks produced by Black Milk, Buckwild Analogic, 9th Wonder and M-Phazes (to name a few) the album definitely has something for everyone.

The man behind this masterpiece is DJ K.O., who kept one thing on his mind when creating the line up: "I approached this as a hip-hop a fan, he says. "I thought about my own ideal collaborations and took it from there."

K.O. used his connections from the college radio show he hosted at Rutgers, along with spinning and promoting parties in NYC to get the ball rolling. In 2004, he formed Elementality Productions. It wasn't long until K.O. shared his vision with John Robinson, (member of What's The Science? and President of Shaman Work Recordings). Three years later, the finished product exceeds even K.O.'s expectations.

"Most of the songs are good, old-fashioned hip-hop," he explains. "There's a raw, angry gutter sound mixed with more smooth, soulful tracks."

With Picture This... hitting stores in September, KO's eyes are already set on the future. "I'm a lot more focused on the behind-the-scenes stuff than dee-jaying", he says. "The aspects of A&R, management, and executive producing are most appealing to me."

He also hopes to continue to provide a platform for new performers to be heard on a large scale.

"Nowadays, it's so hard to break an artist", he says. "I knew there were so many dope artists who just needed a chance to be heard."

One of the best compilations released this decade!!! You can't help but jump out your seat when you peep the guests and producers... probably one of the best lineups ever. You got the current crop of some of the undergrounds biggest stars and some of the best up coming artists, From Elzhi to Silent Knight and from Ayatollah to Analogic... mix in some Black Milk, M-Phazes, Buckwild, 9th Wonder, Talib Kweli, Royce Da 5'9"... the list is endless, I probably only mentioned about half! It's so refreshing to hear all this on one solid album and solid it is, from lyrics to beats, it will defnitely have you nodding in appreciating to how well this project came together. A special thanks has to go to DJ K.O., producer/A&R of Elementality Records and definitely has a bright future with his label if this is anything to go by. The only tiny little thing that got to me was that it only has 12 tracks and with all the talent on the album you can't help but wish there was more. If this was maybe stretched to 16-17 tracks, this would've been an unstoppable album, an instant classic, it still might just become that in a couple of years. For now, enjoy what is a superb release and solidifies the fact the real hip hop is here to stay!

Barak Yalad: Growing up in Roxbury and Springfield, MA, and now residing in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, Barak Yalad has experienced first-hand the challenges facing youths in inner-cities. Indeed, his music can be described as poetry of the street. Barak released his first full-length album, A Loss For Words, in November 2007 on Rawkus Records, the same record label that jumpstarted the careers of other socially conscious hip-hop artists like Talib Kweli and Mos Def. A Loss For Words has been acclaimed for its rugged and raw style and its hearkening back to the politically aware hip-hop of an older generation, rather than the materialism of much of today’s hip-hop. Most recently, Barak opened for KRS-One during the College Music Journal Festival in New York, and had his song “Bewitched” added to the official mix-tape of the Boondocks cartoon on the Cartoon Network.

DJ RODDYROD, of the group Maspyke, and also the Low Budget Crew, has been producing music for the past 15 years, including recording hits with prominent hip hop artists, such as Q-Tip (Lyricist lounge II soundtrack) Words worth, EDO.G, Doug E Fresh, Planet Asia, and Kirby Dominant to name a few..

RODDY ROD’s production career began to bloom after scoring a remix to Doug E Fresh’s “Aiight” under the tutelage of Allen “Allstar” Gordon, producer of SWV and many R&B acts during the mid 90’s. The group later signed to Atlantic Records but saw no significant progress at the label. After parting ways with Atlantic they continued recording and touring the underground circuit. Finally in 2003, they released their debut album, The Blackout, to much critical acclaim. They followed this up in 2005 with the release of Static, on ABB Records.

Producer Roddy Rod is also a member of the Low Budget crew, which includes members Kev Brown, Ken Wood, Oddisee, Cy Young, Kaimbr, DJ Marshall Law, Critically, Eye-Q, Early Reed, P.Rosenburg, Grap Luva, Sean Born and Kenn Starr.

M-Phazes is the perfect example of a diamond in the rough. Born and raised in the Gold Coast of Australia and relatively isolated from Hip Hop culture, M-Phazes has carved a place for himself among Australia's Hip Hop elite and is putting Australia on the global Hip Hop map.

His style is best described as a combination of Neo-Soul & Boom Bap with a modern twist. Drawing inspiration from producers like J Dilla, Battlecat, DJ Premier & Pete Rock, M-Phazes has forged an original sound that is uniquely his own. As soon as the beat drops, you know it another M-Phazes classic.

With 9 years of production work under his belt and over 50 releases all over the world, M-Phazes has moved from strength to strength. Landing his first significant release on Supastition’s 'Chain Letters' in 2005, M-Phazes has been unstoppable since. His discography reads like a who’s who of underground US Hip Hop with his beats being blessed by artists like Pharoahe Monch, CL Smooth, Edo G, Royce Da 5’9, Elzhi, Freeway, Termanology, Sean Price, Othello, Wordsworth and many more.
